MEET THE HEAD COACHES

At Southern Cross we understand the importance of quality coaching. That’s why we have appointed a Head Coach for each of our 4 playing groups, all of which have decades of experience and the Level 3 Elite coaching qualification to match. They will be directly involved in our highest level sides as well as oversee the development of all SX coaches and teams.

Laurel Wentworth – Women’s Head Coach

Laurel started Volleyball in year 7 at high school in Canberra and went on to represent the ACT, NSW and WA at junior and senior level. She was a member of the Australian Junior and Senior Women’s Teams from 1984 – 1996 captaining the side for two years. She has also competed in three World Masters Games. In Perth Laurel played in State League for almost 20 years, 15 of those at Southern Cross Volleyball Club.

Laurel is an experienced Level 3 Elite Volleyball /Beach Volleyball coach. She began coaching in 2002 and has coached WA State Junior and Senior teams ever since. Laurel has also coached State League Teams in WAVL for Southern Cross, Rossmoyne, ECU Chequers and Reds Volleyball Club. She is passionate about the development of athletes and the growth of the sport. While coaching is both challenging and rewarding, she enjoys the opportunity to share her knowledge and experience with others.

Laurel is excited about joining the Coaching Team at Southern Cross VC in 2022 and looking forward to building a competitive Women’s program for future years.

Artem Ipatyev – Men’s Head Coach

Volleyball has always been Artems biggest passion in life. He started playing in Russia as a boy and has never stopped training and developing essential skills. His career in Russia was quite intense, he played locally and internationally gathering a lot of experience which he always wanted to share with others. Moving to Australia never stopped him playing and thinking about how he could pass on his volleyball passion and knowledge onto others so becoming a coach was a natural progression. He has over ten years of coaching experience including work with NSW volleyball (Sydney volleyball league), working at Sydney Grammar and offering private beach volleyball sessions. In addition to being the Men’s Head coach he is also the owner of AVAcademy who has partnered with Southern Cross to provide a range of opportunities for juniors and adults, notably the range and Kids & Junior volley programs across Perth.

Stephen Page – Girl’s Head Coach

Steve started playing social volleyball in 1985. After a number of years playing social volleyball he joined Southern Cross in 2001 to play in the Perth Volleyball League. Over the years he played in played State League, State League Reserves and Division 1. He attended his first coaching course in 2003 and has been coaching at various levels ever since. In 2009 he journeyed to Adelaide to complete the Level 3 Elite coaching qualification.

Steve has coached a range of levels including State League men and women, four years at Australian Junior Volleyball Championships and five years at Australian Volleyball Schools Cup including coaching teams to one gold and one silver medal. He has been coaching WA Junior League teams for the last five years, again for one gold and one silver medal and is currently focussed on the development of junior volleyball through Junior League and the many junior programs currently running at Southern Cross VC.

David Hedge – Boy’s Head Coach

David has been playing volleyball for more than 30 years, currently playing in the WA Volleyball League in addition to the last 3 World Masters Games, numerous Pan Pacific Masters and Australian Masters Games. He is the Vice President of Southern Cross Volleyball Club, holds an Order of Merit and Life Membership recognition by Volleyball WA and is qualified as a Level 3 Elite coach. Throughout his years playing David has been heavily involved as a coach including Senior and Junior WAVL teams of both genders, State Junior Boy’s teams at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships and the Schools Sports WA State team. He is extremely passionate about teaching the fundamentals of volleyball to young players as well as ensuring that playing is always an enjoyable experience.
